At the rush of Mizzou’s flea market, Ruby Hernandez’s Star Girl Market stood out with racks of carefully curated vintage clothing. For Ruby, who has been a fixture at these events for a year, the market is as much about community as commerce. “I’ve been doing it for like a year now, and I just know a lot of girls here so they become regulars like even my friends,” she said.
Her collection centers on 1990s and early-2000s fashion. Tops were Saturday’s bestsellers. Ruby describes her inventory as: “Color coordinated, cute and comfy.” Pricing is also a balancing act. She studies online to price trends and adjusts to what she knows her clientele will pay. “It really just depends on the market online what it sells for, also as far as what I know the girlies would be comfortable with, and what I’m comfortable with,” she said. Behind the scenes, costs add up. Booth fees are her largest expense, followed by gas.

Star Girl Market is defining its place in Columbia’s vintage scene.
